Amalfi was once a marittime republic and one of Italy's four great naval powers, with Pisa, Genoa and Venice. The cathedral and it's impressive bell tower can be reached by ascending an impressive staircase from the town's main square. Next to the cathedral, the Cloister of Paradise, with its 120 Arabic-styled columns, is full of old paintings and mosaics.
